All Your Paint Questions, Answered!
Expert Tips by Plascon for Common Painting Challenges.
Painting can be tricky, but we’ve got you covered! Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked painting questions to help you achieve professional results.
1. How Do I Paint Over Gloss Enamel with Water-Based Paint?
Before painting, determine if the surface has enamel or water-based paint by rubbing it with a cloth dipped in methylated spirits. If the paint comes off, it’s water-based; if not, it’s enamel. Lightly sand the surface to remove the sheen, then apply a coat of Plascon Universal Undercoat. Once dry, finish with two coats of your chosen water-based topcoat.
2. How Do I Remove Mould from a Ceiling?
Mix 4 litres of hot water with ½ cup chlorine-based bleach and ⅓ cup sugar soap solution. Use an abrasive sponge to gently clean the affected area, repeating until the mould is gone. Rinse with clean water and let the ceiling dry completely. Finish with Plascon Kitchens & Bathrooms, which contains Microshield™ to prevent mould growth.
3. How Do I Repaint Metal Chairs?
Clean the chairs with Polycell Sugar Soap, then apply Plascon Universal Undercoat. Once dry, use a matt paint like Polvin or Cashmere for the topcoat. If the chairs have an enamel or acrylic finish, opt for Velvaglo water-based paint.
4. What Paint Should I Use on Uneven Plasterwork?
For uneven interior walls, use a matt-finish paint like Plascon Cashmere to minimize imperfections. For exteriors, choose a textured coating like Plascon Micatex to hide flaws and add a unique texture.
5. How Do I Cover Rust on Burglar Bars or Security Gates?
For mild steel with light rust, use Polycell End Rust on affected areas, followed by Plascon Universal Undercoat. Finish with Velvaglo (oil-based for interiors, water-based for exteriors).
6. How Do I Protect Exterior Walls, Parapets, or Balconies?
Ensure surfaces are clean and dry. Prime with Plascon Plaster Primer, then apply Plascon Multiseal in three coats (1mm total thickness). Finish with two coats of topcoat.
7. How Do I Keep High-Traffic Walls Clean?
Use easy-to-clean paints like Plascon Wall & All for exteriors or Double Velvet for interiors. For walls painted with lesser-grade paint, clean with Polycell Sugar Soap. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners or abrasive tools.
8. How Do I Repair Peeling Paint on Galvanised Steel?
Remove loose paint, rinse the surface, and let it dry. Prime with Plascon Galvanised Iron Primer, then apply Plascon Universal Undercoat. Finish with Velvaglo water-based paint in your desired colour.
9. Can I Use Wall Paint on Other Surfaces?
Yes! With the right primer, you can paint wood, metal, and ceramic items. Always prepare the surface properly for the best results.
10. How Do I Paint Tiles and Melamine?
Clean with Polycell Sugar Soap and fill cracks with Polycell Polyfilla. Apply two coats of tile or melamine primer, then paint with a brush, mohair roller, or spray. Sand lightly between coats for a smooth finish.
11. What Are VOCs?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals in paint that release odours during application. Low-VOC paints are better for your health and the environment.
